Carolina Hurricanes vs New Jersey Devils Analysis

The Carolina Hurricanes have taken control of this series with their strong offensive performance, scoring 15 goals through three games. Jordan Martinhook, Seth Jarvis and Jesper Fast have combined for five goals and nine assists to lead their respective lines – but other members of the offense have also shown tremendous leadership on offense. Jordan Staal, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Sebastian Aho have combined to score six goals and provide four assists so far this season while Brett Pesce, Jaccob Slavin and Shayne Gostisbehere have contributed one goal and five assists from defense to help stoke up offense.

Game 3’s defense, which allowed only two goals through the first two matches, completely collapsed in this one and allowed eight goals against them in defeat. Slavin, Pesce and Brent Burns have led the top two pairings well but their teammates have struggled, giving the Devils access to open shots on goal at will. As well, goaltender Frederik Andersen has struggled, allowing six goals on 59 shots and being replaced in Game 3 by backup Pyotr Kochetkov.

The New Jersey Devils have shown resilience on offense and scored 10 goals including eight goals in Game 3. Jack Hughes, Michael McLeod and Dawson Mercer have led their respective lines with three goals and seven assists to lead the offense – but others on offense have made contributions as well. Miles Wood, Nathan Bastian and Ondrej Palat have combined for four goals and two assists while John Marino and Luke Hughes’ contributions from defensemen are helping push things along further.

The offense has been amazing in this series while defense has been atrocious, conceding 15 goals. Jonas Seigenthaler, John Marino and Dougie Hamilton have led their top two pairings well while the remainder of their unit has struggled against Carolina Hurricanes’ open shots on goal. Vitek Vanecek, however, has had difficulty, conceding seven goals on only 51 shots.

The Devils made an impressionable statement with their Game 3 win and look to seize control of this match from the opening period forward. Dougie Hamilton and John Marino should help to limit Carolina Hurricanes’ offensive efforts by creating turnovers in their defensive zone and restricting shots on goal – giving goaltender Vitek Vanecek plenty of chances to make big saves.
