New York Mets vs Cincinnati Reds Analysis

One encouraging takeaway from Sunday’s loss for the Mets may have been their ability to score six runs and take two leads within four innings of play. As has often been the case recently, however, the pitchers failed to perform in unison, giving up 13 runs during a loss.

The New York Mets had fallen to 17-18 since being 14-7 on April 27. They lost 11 games during this stretch. Last season’s 101-win squad is now just a distant memory when considering this current group. The offense has been subpar, starting the week 21st in runs per game. Due to a top-5 walk rate and HBP total, they currently rank 13th in OBP. However, they only have 36 homers so far this season – 11 coming off of Pete Alonso’s bat – leading them to rank at the bottom-10 slugging percentage. Additionally, this season they rank in the bottom-10 in batting average this season.

Scherzer currently boasts a 3.13 FIP over his 10,927 batter encounters during his major league tenure. He has allowed 2,202 hits and 711 walks for an ERA of 3.1 and career WHIP of 1.077. Scherzer has pitched 2,704 innings during his MLB career and amassed 3,213 strikeouts.

After taking an early lead in Sunday’s contest, the Reds quickly relinquished it immediately afterwards. Cincinnati allowed 11 runs in their second inning, leading them downhill on their home field for a 17-4 defeat in front of their own supporters. Cincinnati’s pitching staff dropped from 22nd in team ERA at 5.19 to 27th, though its relievers managed to maintain top-10 rankings for FIP and WAR afterward.

Luke Weaver will try his best to prevent repeat performances like these. Eight of the runs scored against Luke Weaver were attributable to him as starter. If his first three starts of 2023 are any indication, Weaver may get closer than is comfortable for the Reds. After an off-putting 2022 campaign, Weaver is back at it again with an outstanding 7.88 ERA and an 169 ERA mark. Even more troubling is his HR/9 rate in Great American Ball Park; after having had just 0.3 HR/9 in 2022. He’s allowed at least four runs in each of his starts this season and serves as little more than an innings eater for the Reds. Cincinnati’s chances of bailing Weaver out with their offense do not appear promising. Just behind New York, Cincinnati ranks 22nd in runs per game and have yet to produce more than five runs in any of their eight games played this season.

Both starting pitchers have endured difficult seasons. One is headed for Cooperstown while the other only had two partial seasons as an above-average pitcher. Both offenses have struggled so far this season, though the Mets hitters seem to be outperforming their counterparts in this regard. As they should find no difficulty taking advantage of Great American Ball Park’s generous dimensions. Picking an opponent who shares similar conditions is difficult, yet the Mets face one that fits this description perfectly. The Mets arrive in Cincinnati and will dominate them to take this game as per the MLB betting predictions today.
