2023 NFL OTAs – As NFL Organized Team Activities 2023 begins this season, fans eagerly anticipate the first glimpses of their favourite teams from a distance. Not only are OTAs an opportunity for established players to fine-tune their skills, but they’re also an opportunity for rookies to showcase their abilities alongside veteran peers – many rookies have already made waves during these early stages of OTAs and created headlines. We look closely at seven rookies who have stood out so far and made an impression on their teams and fans.
Bryce Young – Carolina Panthers, QB
The Carolina Panthers selected Bryce Young with the top overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft and may have found their future quarterback. Although initial indications suggested otherwise, Young has made a strong case during OTAs to be given his starting job right away. Young has taken most first-team snaps and impressed me with his command and football intelligence. Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton has even noted Young’s ability to spot inaccuracies during practice sessions and identify play design inaccuracies during sessions. Although Young may appear slightly behind his NFL offensive line counterparts physically, early performances have shown his talents outstrip his physical stature.
2023 NFL OTAs: Devon Achane – Miami Dolphins, RB
The Miami Dolphins found an ideal draft pick in Devon Achane during the third draft round. Achane’s explosive speed and ability to make big plays have quickly made an impressionable statement during organized team activities (OTAs). He’s made headlines for his electrifying runs while demonstrating his receiving skills by making an incredible catch off quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s deep ball throw. Achane’s skill set aligns seamlessly with coach Mike McDaniel’s offensive system, and experts have heralded him as an outstanding addition. Boasting an incredibly quick 40-yard dash time and playmaking ability, Achane could become a dynamic weapon for Miami in their backfield.
Drew Sanders – Denver Broncos, LB
The Denver Broncos defence has been strong over recent seasons, yet they lacked an elite inside linebacker. But they may have finally found one in Drew Sanders, who has made waves during OTAs. Considered by many to be one of the steals in this year’s draft, Sanders has impressed all with his athleticism and versatility; including returning an interception for a touchdown during rookie minicamp! His speed, athleticism, and ability to rush the quarterback make him an invaluable addition to Broncos’ defence.
Tyjae Spears – Tennessee Titans, RB
With his selection, Tennessee Titans have added Tyjae Spears as a dual-threat weapon to their backfield. Despite initial concerns regarding his knee and arthritis, Spears has demonstrated no restrictions during off-season training camp (OTA) practices, actively participating in each practice while showing his quickness, acceleration and receiving abilities. His impressive catch during the team period garnered notice and showed promise as being a valuable asset in Tennessee’s run-first approach offensive approach.
Nathaniel Dell – Houston Texans, WR
Houston Texans rookie wide receiver Nathaniel “Tank” Dell and quarterback C.J. Stroud have established an encouraging rapport. Dell quickly established himself as Stroud’s favourite target during organized team activities (OTAs), showing an ability to transition in and out of breaks seamlessly. Dell’s college career, where he led FBS in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown receptions, has translated well to the professional level; his route running and rapport with Stroud have impressed observers and hinted at a potentially special relationship.
C.J. Stroud – Houston Texans, QB
Houston Texans selected C.J. Stroud with the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft with hopes of finding their franchise quarterback. Though Stroud is yet to become their starter, his work ethic and professionalism have won praise from both the head coach and teammates alike. Stroud’s dedication to continuous improvement and eagerness to seek feedback shows his dedication towards honing his craft and becoming a successful NFL quarterback.
Puka Nacua – Los Angeles Rams, WR
Puka Nacua, the Rams’ fifth-round pick from BYU, has made a first impression during OTAs. Both his quarterbacks and experienced teammates have recognized his impactful play. Nacua has made himself known during practice sessions by being active across all groups, running routes and creating plays. While his athleticism may only be average, Nacua’s creativity and effectiveness after the catch have drawn praise. Nacua has shown his mettle during college and OTA practices, earning rave reviews from coaches and teammates alike. Now it is up to the Rams’ offence to determine whether Nacua can fill a niche role.
These Rookies have wasted no time showcasing their abilities and making an impact during the early stages of OTAs. Their teams and fans will closely monitor their performances as they continue to develop and compete for starting roles.
