Chicago Cubs vs Miami Marlins Analysis

On Sunday, Justin Steele will make his sixth start of the year and attempt to build on his recent dominance against the Padres by sailing through 5.1 shutout innings and record four straight victories. Young lefty Justin Steele has been one of the best pitchers in MLB this season, yielding either zero or one runs in four of five outings while sporting an outstanding 1.19 ERA and 0.89 WHIP as part of an undefeated record. Steele has pitched 4.2 scoreless innings against the Marlins so far in his young career. Chicago has made strides this season, only losing two series total. After dropping three of four home games against the Dodgers last weekend, Chicago bounced back by earning two victories out of three against the Padres before this series began. Chicago still hasn’t experienced defeat on the road this year. Cody Bellinger has been producing consistently, recording at least one RBI in six of his last nine games. While he missed several due to the birth of his child, he went 1 for 4 in Friday’s loss for a stellar 0.930 OPS score. Overall he now has 15 RBIs to go along with 15 runs scored. Chicago ranks fourth with an average run production of 5.48 runs per game and boasts a team ERA of 3.50.

Bryan Hoeing will return for another start for the Marlins on Sunday to close out their series against Atlanta Braves, following his less-than-stellar outing against them earlier in the week in which he allowed four runs in 3.2 innings against their potent offense and suffered a 7-4 defeat. Hoeing remains a rookie pitcher after surrendering 17 runs in just 12.1 innings pitched last season. Hoeing did pitch one shutout inning against the Cubs during that campaign, however. Miami had won four series in a row before entering their series with Atlanta earlier this week but lost three out of four bouts against a strong Braves squad. Marlins pitching had been one of the team’s hallmark strengths throughout most of this season; however, against Atlanta they struggled, giving up 28 runs over four games and eventually recording a 3-2 victory on Friday to restore some balance to their performance. Jon Berti has been an incredible contributor for the Marlins this month. The veteran shortstop has recorded at least one base hit in all but six of their games and now boasts eight RBIs with an OPS of 0.634. Berti hit 0.333 against Chicago last season before going 0 for 3 on Friday. Miami has not been an aggressive force at the plate this season, scoring only 3.26 runs on average and boasting a 4.41 team ERA that ranks them 19th.
